Cortina: The Story of Ford's Best-Seller

In the 1960s the Cortina was an entirely new type of British car, light yet strong, cheap to buy yet roomy. It established a new class of car - the Cortina Class - and Fords rivals had to rush to compete. Not only was the Cortina the first, it was the best, too; a fascinating, ever-evolving project around which Ford-Europe's planning always revolved.

Here, for the first time in a book, are all the facts, figures, images and legends of the Cortina story. With over 180 color and black and white photos this is the fascinating story of a incredibly successful car.

5Ford once knew what it was doing...& still does, in Europe...  Jun 26, 2008
By GRH "Ex WHA Jet"
This book covers the evolution of the Ford Cortina in great detail. It is interesting to note how the car was constantly improved, and that each new generation of the model moved a bit upmarket, thereby increasing sales not only through repeat buyers but also by garnering conquest sales in the higher market niche it was entering. Ford of Europe has been successful in the family car market, first with the Cortina, then the Sierra, and at present with the Mondeo. If only the parent North American arm of the company had some sense of continuity. In the past, if you asked someone to name a Ford sedan, in the 60s they would have said, Galaxie 500, in the 70s, LTD, in the 80s and early 90s, Taurus. But since the year 2000 I doubt anyone can name a desirable Ford family sedan, without having to stop and think. Considering this should be Ford's core business, having lost an entire generation of consumers to Honda and Toyota is a disgrace
